India Travel Tips with a Baby or Toddler
This is why Indian travel is so exciting and out of reach because more than half of the world’s countries are here. Why do I say this? As here it snows, deserts are there, we have mountains and seas also there, there is sun & then rain & then snow everything! Can you even travel to India with kids? Although the country presents some challenges to many families who wish to travel there and may mandate certain vaccinations for US citizens. There is a lot of traffic. Never drink the tap water.
If you can pull through these lumps and bumps, India is the place to be! Here every restaurant or hotel is child-friendly. Indians adore kids of all ages. In India, their gestures, tears, and even irritation are very easily accepted, a fact that is causing some concern in other parts of the world.
India simply gives you the true vacation and not a ‘holiday to kids’. You deserve to indulge yourself. For families with young children, a great option is India, which has a family-friendly culture, good hotels even kids will enjoy, delicious dining, and easy access to top-notch childcare.
I have been traveling through North and South India with my 1-year-old, and after nearly two months on the road, here is what I learned—a detailed guide on how to travel in India with your baby.
Is India Kid Friendly?
When it came to the point of going with family to India, we had some doubts in the small corner of our heads. We hoped to find out what the children might eat, whether they would be affected by the heat, and how they would cope with changes in the environment. So, do people in India really click photographs of her, as we have read? And if we have kids to carry safely in a moving rickshaw, together with their luggage, all while overcoming the language barrier? So, the main question is whether India is a kid-friendly place.
Of course! It is home to many experiences and activities that make it an amazing family travel destination. There are many restaurants available with kids´ menus, and they will be delighted to arrange customized meals for children. Those under five may generally stay/eat free in hotels, and it’s usually only children under 12 who can sleep in an extra bed (not an existing one) in your room for a mere charge.
India Travel—A large family taking a flight to India means a high cost of airfare, whereas if you book an AC First-class berth for 4 persons on the train, it will be comfortable and only your compartment. Your privacy is guaranteed, and at a cheaper price, the entire family will have a rewarding experience.
The benefits don’t end there. You will want to hire a taxi for the day when going sightseeing—the kids can see Grandma and Grandpa comfortably as you re-arrange seats to enjoy the views and find some clean restrooms. It is also great for your budget and the environment, so taking the metro or 3-wheeler autos all around the big city will give you a fun, adventurous family ride.
Here, I have tried to explain all the important things that can make your kid-friendly travel easier.
Lightweight baby carrier / Buggy
If the sidewalks are broken or bumpy, or if no paths exist whatsoever, and in certain specific areas where you must take stairs. In these instances, strolling around is useless at all, and therefore the perfect choice for such moments is a lightweight service. Most of the time I use an Ergo carrier (so comfortable for me, can be used from 7 pounds or more.. and not hot/heavy like many carriers which require you to insert yourself behind a panel of heavy fabric). I love this carrier for travel, especially because it folds up so small! The Ergo Carrier is wonderful for airports after checking in and gate-checking the stroller, and it makes sense to use when going on short outings where bringing along a stroller would be too much of an inconvenience. You will also need a stroller if the baby is bigger (at least 5–6 months). My child was very young when I was able to walk with them from Delhi to the beaches of Sydney in my eco-friendly all-terrain stroller. India is hard on damaged, uneven pavements, so leave the umbrella stroller or give thought as to where you will use it. You can always review if tourist places are stroller-friendly online before you go. An all-terrain stroller will do perfectly most of the time. When you travel with a baby or toddler, a stroller is never just a stroller. It’s a crib, a feeding tray, an organizer of all your things, and it acts as a baby jail when you need to put your focus elsewhere but don’t want to worry about what the munchkin is getting into while your hands are full.
Best diapers in India
I remember wondering how they changed a dirty diaper without getting shit everywhere until I finally figured out the tab diapers, which kind of makes sense to lead people away from this problem. And I did this quickly, and it cleared my mind up.
Having tried almost all diapers in India, I have found Pampers Premium to be the best. I think it was better than diapers with us here in the US. In order to find the right size for your baby, please be informed that you need to know the weight of your child in kilograms. I use the brand Huggies of wipes. They followed the same formula as the US. Adding perhaps a tad too much of them
How do I get the best products? Amazon! Yes, you heard that right—Amazon was born in India. If you have an Amazon account, shipping to your hotel is just a day or two away. For those little items you forget—diapers, baby food, snacks, or formula—that you may need to purchase while there, they can deliver it to your hotel, and the front desk typically will bring it right up to you by Disney’s package delivery services. Deliver Food via Swiggy (App) Offers ready meals, grocery, and bakery items If you do not have Google Pay. Then click on Cash on Delivery. Alternatively, you can ring the hotel concierge and request that they send someone to get something for you at a pharmacy if you fall sick — with a few exceptions: A doctor will be sent for you if needed.
Diapering and Potty Training in India
This is true even in your own country; public restrooms may not be safe enough by Western standards, and if you are traveling with a potty-trained child (possibly), it can make things that bit more difficult. Also, when your child is not quite skilled at holding it in — leave none without a portable potty seat or even a small travel potty on the go! Bring a dedicated bag of wipes, sanitizer spray, & toilet paper, especially since public toilets do not provide these. Same visit, drop by the lobby and ask the hotel staff where the pristine restrooms are located. Thousands of higher-tier hotels keep reasonably-kept bathrooms that one can access and shopping malls or restaurants also have this just as a facility.
The last thing you want to have to do is change the baby on one of these so it is impracticable. There are no changing tables anywhere else in the country unless you are at a play cafe, fancy mall, high-end theater, or some other family-friendly venue. I’m not quite sure how other mamas do it. I look for someplace quiet, put the stroller reclined all the way back, close it with a parasol, and then… I change him. A security guard in a crowded location If you are somewhere very public, ask a security guard if there is a private area where you can change. If you are really lucky, they will bring you into a locked area for a little while. That was the age that I could bring my kids with me to the bathroom.
Feeding Babies in India
If you’ve done it, please share your experiences. Feeding babies in India can take you to some surprises in life, and of course not all the good surprises. I know just a tiny bit about this because I have gone on the guilt trip that is finding baby food and it honestly felt like I was searching for the Holy Grail. Yes, India may have a rich blend of foods to offer, but when it comes down to the right baby food, it’s almost like hunting for a needle in the haystack.
One thing to note is that we do have less variety of baby foods available here in India. While you will find some familiar brands, including Nestle and Similac, don’t be surprised if you don’t see your favorite organic picks. It’s as if the universe had said, “Here, have some plain rice instead!” I quickly found out that when it comes to local food, spicy does not bode well for the baby.
And then there are the local food sorts of things. While adults may relish their fiery dal and spiced curries, the same does not apply to babies, and licking off your small fry after a highly flavored meal is no parent’s idea of a tasty treat. Instead, it was I who resorted to boring, flavorless food and hid any spices that we had.
Order food for the little one from BigBasket or carry jars of ready baby food. And the most important thing is: to save your humble sense of humor! I mean, when it comes down to the wire, there is always that trusty instant baby cereal with a smile!
Snacks for Toddlers in India
A happy, fed toddler is an absolute must when you are out and about. Thankfully, there are more than a few snacks in India that are totally perfect for little tummies. Parle-G biscuit is a national favorite; your baby cannot do much mess with it. Bananas and mangoes are fruits high in vitamin oxalate (Vitamin C), which can be found easily, and they have peels, so there isn’t any worry about hygiene.
If your toddler has a healthy appetite, locals may have Murukku (crunchy rice flour snack) or Khakra (thin crispy wheat crackers) to munch on also. Be careful about the spice, though—most Indian snacks come with a kick!
Tip: Keep a small pack of familiar snacks from home in your bag for emergencies (read: when your child decides that nothing else is suitable).
What is the Best Indian Place for Kids?
It is a very big and diversified country with myriad experiences that suit well for families with young kids. These are some favorite spots:
- GoaThe beaches at Goa, its relaxed lifestyle, as well as resorts designed for kids, make it a family-friendly place.
- Kerala: A state that is blessed with a cool climate, calm backwaters, and plenty of green makes for an ideal holiday destination, given it offers something for every need of the parents and kids.
- Rajasthan: Visit the royal palaces and forts of cities like Jaipur and Udaipur. The weather is hot and mostly dry, so it can be managed if you are prepared.
- Hill Stations If you want a little chill, then visit the hills in Himachal Pradesh. Two of India’s celebrated hill stations, Manali and Shimla, guarantee spectacular views to relish on your India photo shoot and an experience of the Himalayan range.
- Ahmedabad: For a touch of the cultural and family-friendly but with fewer tourists.
Trick: No matter where you are, skip the peak summer months (April—June) when temperatures rise so high that can be a prescription for community service if trapped into sharing tours.
Hotels in India
Locking in the right home base can absolutely make or break your vacate. Family-friendly resorts with amenities like cots and babysitting are common throughout major Indian cities and tourist destinations. But you must verify these details prior to booking.
Top Tips for Choosing Hotels
Cots and Baby Beds: Almost always available (on request) at 3-star accommodation and above. But if you stay in cheap hotels or homestays, preparing your own travel crib is good.
Tips: Guest-filtered drinking water, Bath Water use boiled or bottled to bathe babies uniform XML:space=”preserve”
Bottles Washed: Many hotels are delighted to boil water for you to wash bottles. If not, carry the travel water bottle sterilizer.
TIP: If you will be in budget accommodations, bring your own crib sheets and baby-proofing items (e.g., outlet covers, and corner guards).
Bath Water
Tap water in India does not even qualify for drinking; hence, it goes without saying not to use it for bath time with your baby. Good hotels supplied filtered/boiled water for bathing on request. If your baby has very sensitive skin, bathe him or her in bottled water if possible, or bring along additives for the bath to use in poor-quality water.
TIP: Bring an inflatable small bathtub For when the hotel bathtub is not up to snuff, or they don’t even have a tub in the first place.
Washing Bottles
While traveling, sterilizing baby bottles can be a tough task, but it is essential for the health of your infant. However, the hotels usually will provide boiling water for potable and sterilized food. Pack a portable bottle sterilizer or even some sterilizing tablets or liquids if you are on the go. These are handy to use because they can easily fit in your pockets Put them with those bottles in cold water, and they are ready.
Tip: Bring a brush for cleaning bottles on the road, and if your baby’s bottle is compatible, use disposable liners.
Cribs in Indian Hotels
Cots, or baby road beds, as they are called in some countries—if you’re not staying in a mid-range to a luxury hotel, availability and quality will vary. Always check with the hotel before your arrival, and if you can, bring a travel crib. It guarantees that your little one is being put in a secure, clean, and relatively comfortable setting to sleep.
Hack: Bring a favorite blanket or sheet of home to make your baby feel safe and comfortable enough for them to, perhaps, sleep better.
Childcare in India
There are a wide array of childcare options available in India, from playschool and daycare to boarding school, etc. I have also stayed in many hotels and resorts which provide babysitting services. These are often administered by trained staff, but it is essential to be clear about your expectations.
Services with nannies are available to provide even more support. For obvious reasons, it’s always a good idea to locate a nanny through an agency that has done criminal and feces checks on all nannies they represent.
Hint: Childcare can assist with this, but the more you keep to your baby’s schedule/routine—no matter how crazy it may seem at the time when all you want is 5 minutes of me-time for yourself—will lessen meltdowns.
Nannies in India
Nanny: If you are staying for a longer period or need more assistance,
then hiring a nanny in India is also an option. In my experience, nannies are easy to find through agencies in major cities. They can help you with your day-to-day so that you get a downtime transitional period.
Inquire about previous experiences the nanny has had specifically with your baby’s age group, and make sure to define the boundaries from the get-go. Interview candidates to find the right fit for your family as well.
Tip: Make sure you clarify the work schedule and other responsibilities in advance to prevent further misunderstandings.
Food Safety While Traveling
A lot of time, traveling with kids, and some food safety problems are serious. India surely has mouthwatering food, but it is recommended to be careful, of course, with street food and everything. Choose freshly prepared and hot food always. Don’t eat fresh salads, fruit with the skin on, or food that has been left out.
Drink only bottled water—with ice only if you are sure it is made from purified water, even at restaurants. Hotels and restaurants located in tourist areas are usually innocuous to health, but precautions cost nothing.
Pro Tip: Carry a miniature hand sanitizer and wipes to quickly clean your child’s hands before you feed them👶.
Breastfeeding in India
I generally never faced any criticism for breastfeeding in public, as people just walk past with a curious look (rural area). Find a light scar or bring along your nursing cover if you prefer privacy. We do have public places and airports where people can nurse in, but they might not be so comfy.
In a more conventional scenario, you might see women excusing themselves to breastfeed in private, but I doubt you would face public censure if you chose to nurse on the spot.
Hot weather makes climate challenging in India, so do not forget to refresh, especially with breastfeeding, which makes you dehydrated.
Activities to do in India with Babies and Toddlers
There are so many things to do in India and just as much fun for kids and their parents! From the beaches of Goa to the backwaters of Kerala and colorful markets, there is something all can explore.
Beaches: The beach life of Goa is an amazing place for your little ones to enjoy and spend time playing in the sand. Boat Rides on Kerala backwaters peaceful calm water.
Parks and Gardens: Cities like Bangalore, and Delhi boast some of the best parks like Lalbagh Botanical Garden, and Lodhi Gardens where one can spend a calm day out.
Delhi Zoos and Aquariums: For animal lovers among toddlers, the National Zoological Park in Delhi and Taraporewala Aquarium in Mumbai are ideal places for a visit.
Tip: Make sure to plan activities around naps as needed to prevent meltdowns and always have snacks and water on hand.
Play Cafes
We mostly see play cafes in Western countries, but their arrival is slowly increasing in major Indian cities or metropolitan areas. Take your kids to play at a kid’s cafe, which is a safe environment for them and a place for the parents to chill with coffee 🙂 Some popular options include:
Funky Monkey Play Center (Bangalore): This has a large play space with an array of slides, ball pits, and a toddler zone. Play Around Mumbai has different play structures and seating areas for adults. These are well-kept, clean cafes with staff who know all about little kids.
TIP: Research online reviews & visit at non-peak hours to avoid the hordes.
Historical Sites
History can be interesting for older children who appreciate India’s rich history, but what about toddlers? While they may not appreciate the intricate architecture of the Taj Mahal, sites like these can still be made fun for little ones.
- Taj Mahal (Agra)—The sheer vastness of the garden around them helps them to walk and run; toddlers love open spaces.
- Red Fort (Delhi): The huge campus provides ample space for the little legs to run and there’s a sound-and-light show in the evenings that can be interesting.
- Amber Fort Jaipur: The fort provides elephant rides as well, which can be a fun experience for the kids but safety and ethical issues need to be taken into account.
Pro Tip: Bring a stroller or baby carrier, many sites require lots of foot traffic.
So, these are some of the animals and insects that you can encounter during India Tour.
Is something you really should wonder carefully about, specifically if you are vacationing with youngsters.
Problem: I mean seriously, it’s not even only related to protecting yourself from getting bitten by mosquitoes because you know how merciless those little miscreants can get. India is a country abundant with animals and insects that could add a little extra excitement to your trip than what you budgeted for. And this one time a monkey stole my snack. I mean — negotiating with a stubborn monkey is far from fun, trust me!
Agitate: Now, Imagine what it must be like safeguarding children when you are always scouting around for mosquitoes or one of the street hounds that roam the neighborhood and those monkeys…those wily little creatures. It is like needing to tweet revenge by carrying a flyswatter and case at all times. It can really put a damper on the joy of discovery when you spend your days worrying about child safety.
Solution: So… what is it? What to do? No Holds Barred The highest alert begins with bugs, so sage advice is to take lots of insect repellent and use it often. Humans are known for keeping consumables in airtight containers, but prepare yourselves to keep all muffins, kachoris, and biscuits you have packed sealed lest the monkeys find out and take your goodies away! The same goes for crowded trails if you are hiking in areas with frequent wildlife activity. This way you can appreciate the beauty of creatures from India without being up close and personal to them.
All the Extra Attention
India is a child-loving nation, and chances are that your little one will be pampered. And be prepared to receive friendly paparazzi-like want-only pictures with your baby’s attention or cute little small gifts. It is mostly fine but may be too much from time to time.
If you are uncomfortable with the attention, do so politely but firmly. Or you could even joke by saying, “She’s a mini-celebrity!” often works wonders.
Note: If need be, use a baby carrier to keep your child close and prevent as much grabbing.
Touching and Staring in India
This should remind us that it is commonplace in parts of India to show their love for babies and young children by reaching out and physically pinching those cheeks. However, full-fledged nosebleeds can be unpleasant for everyone involved but are typically benign.
If it does not feel right to you, just politely decline with a smile. A hand gesture or “Just say no, thank you” in English usually does the trick. ◄ Back Next ► In India,
Staring also regularly exists and is not considered rude. Just try to take it on the chin and remember that more often than not, it’s only curiosity.
TIP: Put your baby in a hat or some sunglasses to lessen all the focus (besides, they look really cool).
Vaccines Required To Visit India
Administer routine vaccinations for your child before traveling to India. Also, give the following vaccines:
- Hepatitis A: Recommended for all travelers to India.
- Typhoid: Particularly if you are going to be staying in rural areas or eating outside of major hotels and restaurants.
- Japanese Encephalitis: Required if you are staying a long time in rural areas during the transmission season.
- Rabies: If you will be coming into close contact with animals or plan on traveling to remote areas, consider this one.
Talk to your pediatrician well before you leave about getting your kids up to date on their vaccinations.
Pro hack: Have your kid’s vaccination records in your purse.
Hand Sanitizer
Vim + hand sanitizer = must when in India. Although most restaurants and public places do have handwashing facilities, they are not always desired or hygienic. Wash your hands with sanitizer before eating and after going to the toilet in any circumstance where you see it necessary.
A non-alcohol-based, kid-friendly sanitizer helps if your child has delicate skin. Keep it in your diaper bag or pocket for easy access.
Tip: Instead of one, pack a couple of small bottles and never run out.
What to Wear in India
Reprinted with permission from Raising Good Humans by Hunter Clarke Fields, creator of the Mindful Mama Podcast and founder of Hunter Yoga in Vieques, Puerto Rico. The climate in India is varied, so pack as per the season and the destination:
Hot and humid areas (Goa, Kerala): cotton clothes only. Wear baggy clothing that covers the skin; trousers and long sleeves will add some sun protection,
plus protect from mosquitoes as well.
Cooler climates (Himachal Pradesh, etc.): Layer up.JsonProperty One should pack a combination of warm wear that can be layered when needed.
Cultural Considerations: Whilst there is no specific dress code for children, it is a good idea to adhere to modest dress, even more so in rural or religious areas.
Pro Tip: Remember to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen for babies too—the sun can be super strong.
Pollution in India
In major cities such as Delhi, winter smog can make air quality hazardous. If you are headed to these places, plan on an air purifier inside your hotel room, and don’t do outdoor activities during days when pollution levels are at their highest.
A child-sized pollution mask can be useful for toddlers, although this may be easier said than done if they do not want to keep it on. Stay updated with local air quality reports to help plan your adventures.
Tip: If you can, do outdoor activities in the morning when pollution levels are lower.
When to visit India — the best time of year
When to go to India and experience the difference in time, winter in most of India is a great time to go, mainly from November through February for cooler and baby-friendlier weather.
Try not to go out in the heart of summer (April to June), though, as the temperatures can spiral and you and your young one could suffer. Rain Rain,
Go Away: June—September (Monsoon Season): Heavy rains can be a recipe for disaster if you’re not well-prepared.
Top tip: The in-between seasons (March and October) provide a good mix of nice weather without the crowds.
Jungles, Palaces of Rajasthan
Rajasthan, where the palaces are grander and the national parks wild. And that makes it perfect for families who want to immerse themselves in the culture but still have a little excitement.
Palaces and Forts: Visit the grandiose palaces in Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur.
Historical Sites: Many historical sites have vast open spaces that allow your toddler to move around freely.
Wildlife Safaris: Various national parks from Ranthambore to Sariska are also great places for going on family safaris in and around Rajasthan. The excitement of sighting a tiger might not register with a toddler, but being amidst nature certainly will!
Tip: Choose a safari that is appropriate for young children, as some of these tours can be lengthy and bumpy.
Kerala: The MĂ©lange of Heritage & Hills
Kerala is known as God’s Own Country It’s a beautiful place with a blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty The cooler climate of the hill stations so newly pairs with well-equipped accommodations in order to draw many families, making it an excellent choice for tourists.

Munnar: Munnar is blessed with tea gardens and low temperatures. Great for easy hikes and general outdoor exploration with kids.
Ayurvedic Treatments If there is anything that matches the beauty in Kerala, it’s got to be the Ayurvedic treatments. Most resorts offer child-friendly services, such as light, non-oil massages. Traditional therapies are focused on adults but more expensive places offer options for children too. It is a special experience that everyone in the family can love.
Tip: Choose a family-friendly resort specifically designed for children during your Kerala stay. These accommodations feature kids’ pools, play areas, and babysitting services.

Tuck into the Himalayas gently
Indian Himalayas are a great off-beat destination for families seeking serene sites of nature rather than walking over the strenuous hikes the area is famous for. The charm of the Himalayas is gently introduced in towns like Manali, Shimla, and Dharamshala.
ManaliIf you are traveling to Manali with your family, it cannot be better than that, surrounded by greenery, rivers, and pleasant weather. Head to the Solang Valley for a cable car ride, which is good enough for nearby views without getting your little one all tiered.
Shimla: The toy-trian to Shimla is a delightful experience for kids Taking the slow ride through tunnels and over bridges is just as cool for kids as it is for adults.
Dharamshala: This peaceful Tibetan culture and the beauty of nature are located in Dharamshala. The Norbulingka Institute is also there, where kids can play and where they have cultural workshops.
Pro-tip: As the highlands can get pretty cold, even in summer it would be wise to bring a thicker jacket or some warm clothes.

India has something to offer everyone—whether it is the sandy beaches of Goa, the serene backwaters of Kerala, or the majestic palaces of Rajasthan—experiences that are bound to be etched in memory forever.
